We have been having a great time in the art room this week with our first clay project. Sixth grade students created these beautiful clay monogram wall hangings. They learned the slab and coil method and how to attach pieces together. I love the way they turned out!

Sixth grade students created symmetrical designs. We looked at different examples form around the world of artists using radial symmetry. Then we talked about how to create something that has radial symmetry and students created their own symmetrical designs. Finally we joined them together to make this colorful mural.
We are in the process of creating landscapes with oil pastels. First students learned how to create a value scale with one color plus black and white. We also looked at different types of environments and how the horizon line changes based on the type of environment we were looking at. Finally students created their landscape using value to create perspective and they look great!
3D art students created these clay houses! First they thought about a character who they would like to write a story about. Then they wrote a few paragraphs to develop the background and characteristics of the creature or person. Then students drew the type of house their character would live in. Finally students used what they learned about clay this year to create their characters home out of clay. I love the way they turned out. Great job guys!
Sixth grade students have started working on this radial symmetry project. They learned about medieval rose windows for inspiration. They are doing a great job so far! Students are in the process of finishing their radial symmetry projects this week and they are looking good! Next we will start to work on a Medieval castle design project. Stay tuned for updates on what is happening in the MMS art room.
We are finishing up our clay unit in 6th grade with these fun cupcakes! Sixth grade art students learned about the pop art movement and the work of artist Claes Oldenburg. After viewing and discussing Oldenburg's food sculptures students did oil pasted sketches of cupcakes and then created them out of clay.
Sixth grade students had a great time making these clay dragons. First students learned that dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology. The dragon has many animal-like forms such as turtles and fish but they are most commonly depicted by Chinese artists as snake-like with four legs. Great job on this project sixth grade!
